End child marriage in the United States

Child marriage is a harmful practice and a violation of child rights. Zonta International believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances.

The risks are just as real for child marriages in the United States as they are in developing countries. Between 2010 and 2015, more than 200,000 minors were married in the U.S.

Only four states (Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) have outlawed child marriage. Zonta International and UNICEF USA have joined forces to raise awareness and enact change to end child marriage globally and locally, right here in the U.S., with the ultimate goal of ensuring that girls fully enjoy their childhood free from the risk of child marriage.

Call on your state representative and state senator to end child marriage with zero exceptions by supporting legislation in your state legislature. If you live in one of the four states mentioned above, you will be able to send a message of thanks to your lawmakers for their leadership in helping to pass child marriage legislation in your state.
